in hawaii. cnn's brianna keeler is there. brianna there is no official word when he is coming back to the mainland, as that fiscal cliff deadline gets closer what do you think will happen out there as the week rolls on? >> reporter: well, miquel, it's hard to believe that president obama would not at some point come back to washington it is not officially on his calendar at this point but he has obviously come out here for christmas break while congress is away from washington as well and it is, of course, a little bit of a working vacation for him, as the white house tries to work something out with senate democrats, some sort of package to avoid these tax hikes for middle class americans here tend of the year. that's something, of course that will require some buy-in from senate republicans to pass. and it seems that unlikely that senate minority leader mitch mcconnell would want to negotiating? that he doesn't feel will be able to also pass the house, which would require the support of some house republicans and that's part of the reason why this is such a difficult task and it

in hawaii where the president is spending the christmas holiday. brianna, the president maybe a little too optimistic that a deal can be reached? aloha, by the way. >> he did say last night that he is a hopeless optimist that something can get done, but what we know, it's not going to be that big package, obviously of deficit reduction as well as dealing with these tax hikes that are set to kick in. that's not what's going to be happening, instead, he's pressing for something smaller just to a deal with stopping those tax hikes from kicking in for americans making $250,000 per year or less. and also trying to make sure that unemployment benefits are extended. listen to what president obama said last night and also listen to what some of the house republican resistance from speaker boehner to his sort of short-term plan here. >> in the next few days, i've asked leaders of congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle class americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on both growth and deficit reduction.

in hawaii and, yes, christmas brings us one day closer to possibly the fiscal cliff, the huge tax increases, spending cuts that could take effect in one week or so. brianna keeler is watching there in hawaii, joining us with the update. first of all, how is the president, how is the first family spending the holiday? >> presumably right now they are sleeping in, suzanne, because it is still very early here as you know. >> what time is it? >> we are expecting of course they'll have a christmas. let's see. 6:00 in the morning bright and early. we've been at it for a few hours. we expect them to have a nice christmas meal at the house they're renting. the white house chef is here. maybe we'll get details on what they are going to eat. there is nothing on the president's public schedule. he is frequently gone and visiting with troops in the past so we wouldn't be surprised if he did that again today. i will tell you that bo the dog is actually along for the ride here in hawaii and the white house released a video where bo just really kind of steals the show. let's look at a little of that. this

today. the president is pulling the plug on his trip to hawaii to tend to urgent matters in washington. with tax hikes looming in less than a week, he's scheduled to return to the white house tomorrow, just as a deadlocked congress reconvenes days ahead of the so-called fiscal cliff. you're just six days from feeling this. now, first hit is coming on january 1st when your take home pay will drop by 2% because of a scheduled hike in the social security payroll tax. that's just the start. income taxes are set to climb too. and you'll notice that when employer gets to around the adjusted withholding, the government spending cuts, those are also scheduled for january 1st and bound to slow the economy and some argue they'll weaken the military. congress has seen this coming, but an effort to limit the damage failed last week. republican house speaker john boehner could not persuade enough members of his party to let tax rates rise on incomes over a million dollars while sparing everyone else. dana bash is our senior congressional correspondent. dana, this time tomorrow, the president is sup

-bye to hawaii senator daniel inouye. there's a special memorial service. the senate chaplain will deliver a sermon and you see president obama wiping tears from his eyes. he was the second longest serving senator in history. he served hawaii since 1959. that's where president obama grew up so he's well familiar with daniel inouye. he was awarded medal of honor after losing an arm in world war ii. it was at a hospital in recovery that he met bob dole. senator inouye was 88 years old. for the holidays, the president has gone to hawaii on vacation. white house correspondent brianna keilar tells us no one is really talking, anyone, to get this solved. at least not here at christmas. >> reporter: senate democrats are not in conversations right now with senate republicans or with house republicans. and this is problematic obviously because in order to avoid the fiscal cliff, you would need to find some sort of deal that would make it through the senate and the house and that would mean democratic and republican support. right now, all eyes on the senate because they will reconvene on the 27th that is thursday. and senate majority leader harry reid, it is up to him really to cobble together something that can get some of that support. right now the white house is still supporting a threshold of $250,000 back to their initial starting point for tax rates going up for those making more than that. but you can imagine, hala, that will be very hard for some republicans, maybe even some democrats to sign on to. >> right, and, you know, for just about a week ago, it was common to hear, oh

that he was telling people in a he had inherited a bunch of money and planning to move to hawaii. apparently that's not grounded in any truth whatsoever. but you talk to all the people who knew him and they say this just doesn't sound like jacob roberts. and so at this point, it's just a real mystery. we're also getting more details in terms of the chronology in terms of how it occurred. we're told roberts entered the second floor of the macy's store, started firing actually in the food court area. and then within a minute, within one minute, police swarmed to the scene and when roberts felt like he was cornered, he went to the first floor, that and he where he shot himself. meantime, we're also hearing from someis of his friends. listen to someone who knew roberts from high school. >> he was a counseling aid with us. kids would sometimes be assigned to be our assistant and he helped us with some of the work in the counseling office. i found him to be a very polite young man, soft spoken, nice smile. and just really surprised that somebody with his personality would end up doing
